L-Arginin ist eine bedingt-lebensnotwendige Aminosäure. Sie fungiert im Organismus als natürliche Ausgangssubstanz für die Synthese des Botenstoffes Stickstoffmonoxid (NO). Dieser hat unter anderem eine physiologische Bedeutung für die Gefäßfunktion. Als bedingt lebensnotwendige Aminosäure kann L-Arginin vom Körper selbst hergestellt werden. Allerdings nicht immer in ausreichender Menge.
